About this pack

Stitching is the detail that tells a viewer a garment or a leather prop was made rather than modelled. Volume nine of the trim tool series is 40 stitch runs built as roll brushes: one stroke lays a continuous line of stitching along a seam, at whatever length the seam happens to be, with no repeat you can pick out.

What you get

  • 40 stitch trim brushes for Substance Painter, with adjustable parameters
  • The same 40 as ZRoll brushes for ZBrush
  • Each run as flat textures — normal, height, ambient occlusion and mask
  • Textures at 4K and 16-bit, in PSD, PNG and TIFF
  • A preview of every run
  • A PDF guide and a video covering the Path tool workflow

Version requirements

  • ZBrush 2018 or above for the brushes
  • Substance Painter 2018 or above for the SBSAR and base material

Why a roll brush

A stamp alpha has to be tiled along a seam by hand, and every join is a chance to see the repeat. A roll brush rolls the alpha along the stroke instead, so the seam down the length of a coat is one stroke and one continuous thread, with the stitch spacing constant however the seam curves.

In Substance Painter the brushes are path tool compatible, so the seam stays editable after it is drawn: pull the path and the stitching re-flows along it. In ZBrush the ZRoll versions do the same over a highpoly garment before it is baked, which is the route to take when the stitching has to displace the cloth around it rather than sit on top of it.

The flat map sets are the fallback anywhere else, and they are complete enough to be used on their own — normal and height for the surface, ambient occlusion for the contact shadow under the thread, and a mask for isolating the stitch line inside a layer stack.

About Alphas & Brushes

These sets are the finishing detail that decides whether an asset reads as real. The alphas are rendered from actual geometry rather than traced from photos, so edges stay crisp under projection and the height data holds up when you push it into a normal map.

Brush presets are included for both Substance Painter and ZBrush, with spacing and falloff already dialled in.
