The course

Fabric is the hardest thing to fake. Photographic textures fall apart the moment you scale them or need a variation, so this masterclass builds every material procedurally in Substance Designer, node by node. Across six days you will construct weave structures, use displacement to give cloth genuine relief, design lace and guipure patterns, produce embroidery with real thread geometry, and age fabric convincingly — then set up lights and cameras and render an animated presentation in Marmoset Toolbag.

The roadmap

7 sessions, start to finish.

Every session is a complete piece of work — here is exactly what you build and when.

  1. Session 00

Day Zero — Fast Mode introduction

Substance Designer and Marmoset Toolbag. A fast-mode primer on the basics of Substance Designer, the essential tools and principles, so you can participate fully in the main camp sessions from day one.

  2. Session 01

Day One — Creating fabric materials

Build two fabrics from scratch: a plaid pattern and a plain weave. Practise the core Substance Designer tools by developing both to full detail.

  3. Session 02

    Day Two — Displacement technique

Why displacement matters in cloth presentation, the challenges it introduces, and how to use it to lift presentation quality without breaking your material.

  4. Session 03

Day Three — Lace & guipure fabrics

Design lace and guipure patterns and apply them inside realistic cloth materials.

  5. Session 04

    Day Four — Embroidered fabrics

A step-by-step build of fabrics with embroidery and decorative detail, following the full process from base weave to final polish.

  6. Session 05

Day Five — Torn & aged fabrics + animation

Techniques for simulating wear, tear and vintage texture, then into Marmoset: set up lights and cameras, animate the clothing and render high-quality sequences.

  7. Session 06

Marmoset Toolbag — animation & rendering

Lighting and camera setup for rendering animation the right way, how to present the work professionally, and how to cut short, engaging animations that hold attention.
