Hardsurface Tutorial Collection — VOL 03 - Scifi Helmet
Hardsurface Tutorial Collection VOL 03 takes a sci-fi helmet from 2D concept to finished hard-surface mesh in 270 unnarrated minutes of 3ds Max.
A hand drill, fourteen hours, and one argument: that a mid-poly model can be the deliverable. No highpoly is sculpted and no lowpoly is retopologised — the mesh built in the first six hours is the mesh that gets textured, which removes the bake entirely and spends the saved budget on form and silhouette instead. If you have only ever worked high to low, this is the tutorial that shows the alternative running end to end.
The modelling chapter begins with a proxy matched to reference and then commits to mid-poly for the whole object. Because the polygon budget is not being spent to hit an engine target, the form can carry its detail as geometry rather than as baked normal information, and the silhouette holds up from any angle instead of only from the one the bake was judged at.
Eight hours — more than half the tutorial — go on UVs and texture, and that ratio is the point. Each part gets its own UV sheet in Rizom UV, and each becomes a separate texture set in Substance Painter, so resolution is allocated where the eye goes rather than spread evenly over the object. Substance Painter is entered without any highpoly to bake from, and the recording works through what that changes in practice. Marmoset Toolbag closes it out with materials, lights and camera.
Intermediate, with the same software prerequisites the rest of the series carries. The drill itself and its project files are not included. There is no narration and no subtitle track on any of the six parts.
Every purchase includes free lifetime updates and a no-questions-asked 7 day money back guarantee.
Each tutorial follows one asset from start to finish in real time. Every decision is explained as it is made, so you can see not just what was done but why that approach was chosen over the alternatives.
